Equipment Overview
Designation: Cranes Mk-1/2 12 Twin-Wheel 40-Ton Tank Transporter/Recovery Trailer
Role: Post-war heavy tank transporter and recovery trailer for British Army armoured vehicles.
Historical Context:
- Original 40-ton trailer designed in the UK by Cranes (Dereham) Ltd. to operate with the Diamond-T M980/981 tractor from Chicago, USA, fulfilling the 1941 British Army requirement for tank haulage and recovery.
- Prototype delivered April 1941; total production: 1,197 units by Cranes, R.A. Dyson, Hands, British Trailer Co. Ltd., and Shelvoke & Drewry.
- Cranes designs sent to the USA, where a derivative was produced as the M9 45-Ton trailer for supply to the UK.
- Post-World War II: Most new UK AFVs exceeded Mk-1 trailer width, prompting modification of surviving trailers to Mk-1/2 standard with flat top decks and movable track guides.
- Service Period: Mk-1/2 trailers remained in use until 1975, typically paired with Rolls-Royce-engined Diamond-T tractors.
- Compatibility: Flexible design allowed towing by a variety of vehicles, including Scammells, Fodens, Leylands, and AEC tractors.
- Load Ratings: 40 UK Long Tons ≈ 45 US Short Tons.
