• Original 40-ton trailer designed in the UK by Cranes (Dereham) Ltd. to operate with the Diamond-T M980/981 tractor from Chicago, USA, fulfilling the 1941 British Army requirement for tank haulage and recovery.

• Prototype delivered April 1941; total production: 1,197 units by Cranes, R.A. Dyson, Hands, British Trailer Co. Ltd., and Shelvoke & Drewry.

• Cranes designs sent to the USA, where a derivative was produced as the M9 45-Ton trailer for supply to the UK.

• Post-World War II: Most new UK AFVs exceeded Mk-1 trailer width, prompting modification of surviving trailers to Mk-1/2 standard with flat top decks and movable track guides.
