Equipment Overview
Designation: Cranes Mk-1 12 Twin-Wheel 40-Ton Tank Transporter/Recovery Trailer
Role: Heavy tank transporter and recovery trailer for World War II-era armoured vehicles.

Historical Context:

  • Developed in the United Kingdom by Cranes (Dereham) Ltd. to complement the Diamond-T M980/981 tractor from the USA, fulfilling a 1941 British Army requirement for 40-ton tank haulage and recovery.
  • Prototype delivered April 1941; total production: 1,197 units by Cranes, R.A. Dyson, Hands, British Trailer Co. Ltd., and Shelvoke & Drewry.
  • UK service: Initially retained in the UK and North-West Europe post-D-Day; M9 “Rogers” trailers sent to North Africa.
  • Design evolution: Original Mk-1 accommodated UK tanks up to Churchill; fixed inner and outer track guides later recognized as a limitation, leading to Mk-2 flat-top deck designs. Many Mk-1 trailers were subsequently upgraded to Mk-1/2 standard post-war.
  • Compatible with multiple tractor units, including Diamond-T, Scammell, and AEC tractors.
  • Load Ratings: 40 UK Long Tons ≈ 45 US Short Tons.
