Vehicle Overview
Designation: FV1611 Mk-2 Armoured Personnel Carrier
Role: General purpose troop carrier and internal security vehicle.
Development History:
- Developed from the FV1600 1-ton 4×4 truck by Humber Motor Car Company in the late 1940s.
- Introduced as a lower-cost alternative to the Alvis Saracen.
- Over 1,700 units produced; served in all British Army theatres during the 1960s and 1970s.
- Many units modified for internal security operations, including deployment in Northern Ireland.
Armor and Protection Upgrades (Mk-2):
- Additional 1,200 kg of steel plate added to roof, cab front and sides, and internal walls of rear compartment.
- Blast-protected flooring.
- Up-armoured hatches and direct vision slots with armoured glass.
- Rear doors modified to provide full-width flap for firing, visibility, and ventilation.
- Steel frontal bars added for clearing barricades; large rear flap for personnel protection.
- Rotating smoke grenade launcher included in internal security variants.
Operational Notes:
- Nicknamed “Pig” by crews due to challenging handling and ride discomfort.
- Carries a 6-man infantry squad plus driver and commander.
- Mk-2 variants served into the 1990s, including Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) deployments.
